IIBEC SOC CSC Expo and Pub Night – April 26, 2022

IIBEC Southern Ontario attend the CSC Expo where we exhibited at a table and following the event, we hosted a Pub Night.

The CSC Toronto 2022 Building Expo marked the return of the in-person tradeshow. The Expo continued their tradition of being free for attendees, offering CEU seminars, access to industry experts, and an opportunity to socialize. This year’s theme was Comfort and the Wellness of Occupants in the Built Environment. Speakers addressed experiences, advancements and future opportunities for the construction industry to build better for occupants.

Following the CSC event, the Pub Night was hosted at The Pint Public House at 277 Front Street West from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. for a chance to eat, drink, and socialize. Over 50 tickets were sold.

IIBEC SOC Online Forum: Women and Students Building Sciences Forum – April 7, 2022

IIBEC Southern Ontario hosted the online Women and Students Building Sciences Forum from 8:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on April 7, 2022. There were over 70 registrants for the first National Women and Student Building Sciences Forum and it was developed to bring awareness to this sector. The 3 hour virtual forum provided everyone with a highlight of the diverse and exciting careers available in the building envelop industry, including the following items:

  • How to advocate and promote talented women and students in your organization.
  • Discussion on the many roles for more women at all levels in the industry.
  • Insight on exciting career destinations in construction.This event consisted of a panel of experts, describing their challenges, experiences, and career paths. It also included breakout sessions for everyone to engage in small groups with the experts. Attendees were able to meet different professionals in the Building Sciences sector who share diverse backgrounds and experiences. Also, two bursaries were given away for eligible students studying Building Sciences.The Forum was introduced by the following:

The Panel discussion included Stephanie Robinson, Jennifer Hogan, Tania Krysa and Meagan Kikuta, with chapter past-president Allen Lyte as the moderator.

Items discussed in the forum included:

  • How did you get into Building Science – what has your journey been?
  • What are the typical pathways for advancing within the industry?
  • As women in a male dominated industry, what have been some of your challenges?And what have some of the opportunities been?
  • How do you network? Can you share any tips?
  • What are the opportunities and emerging trends in the market today?
  • What is one thing you wish you could go back and tell your younger self.Following the presentation, attendees were included in in breakout sessions for everyone to engage in small groups with the experts.Breakout room topics included:
    1. Interesting Projects
    2. What skills do you see new staff entering the field needing moving forward?
    3. Have you ever worked in a role that didn’t suit you? How did you navigate that?
    4. What does your typical work week look like? (Design/ Coordination/ Management/Client focus/ business development/ R&D)

    Following the breakout, there was a presentation by National Women in Roofing – Lillianne Dunstall and Amy Antoine.

IIBEC SOC Online Course: Architectural Sheet Metal Flashing – April 13, 2022

IIBEC Southern Ontario hosted the online course, Architectural Sheet Metal Flashing, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on April 13, 2022. The online live course was attended by 12 people and was presented by Jon Peat, RRC, RRO, Russ Raymond, RBEC, RRC, REWC, RWC, RRO and Remo Capolino, RRC, and moderated by Meagan Kikuta and Blair Gamracy.

The Architectural Sheet Metal Flashing course focused on design, assessment, and detailing. Topics covered included material selection, attachment, joinery, expansion joint detailing, fabrication tolerances, drainage assemblies, and penetration flashings. Within sheet metal joinery, the subjects of proper soldering techniques, proper solder repair procedures, as well as application of specific metal joinery types were developed fully. The course covered the fundamentals and more advanced topics suitable for architects, engineers, and building enclosure consulting professionals.

IIBEC SOC Online Course: RRO Preparation Webinar – March 28, 2022

IIBEC Southern Ontario hosted the online course, RRO Preparation Webinar, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30a.m. on March 28, 2022.  The online live course was attended by 45 people and was presented by Shawn Irani, John Mills, and Gary Hamilton.

The course was structured for those who want to become a Registered Roof Observer and must fulfill certain requirements. These requirements include completion of an application, agreement to abide by the IIBEC Code of Ethics, and earning a satisfactory score at an exam centre.

IIBEC SOC Annual General Meeting – February 11, 2022

The IIBEC Southern Ontario Chapter held its second virtual Annual General Meeting on February 11, 2022 with a total of 55 members attending.

The event began with an opening message from the current Chapter PreAllen Lyte and an introduction of the current 2021 Board of Directors. Allen thanked the current Board for their work throughout the year and Meagan Kikuta reviewed the 2021 Financial Statements and the proposed 2022 Budget. Following the financial statement, each of the Committee Directors provided an update on the progress of their respective committees.

The election process for the new 2022 Board of Directors was held online prior to the AGM. The new board is:

It was announced that the Ontario Chapter had once again been granted Gold Level for the IIBEC Chapter Awards which will be presented at this year’s National Convention. The Southern Ontario Chapter then presented awards to:

  • The “Outstanding Committee Chair Award” was presented to Lora Bourck.

Current State of the Construction Industry Presentation:

Following the AGM there was a Presentation on the “Current State of the Construction Industry” by Jeremy Power at Cotney Law.

The presentation addressed considerations of material shortages and how to address them in both existing and new contracts.  How to manage Force Majeure, price changes, delays, material availability, and substitutions was discussed.  Please use the following link to view the presentation.
