Exterior Wall Quality Assurance Course – April 17 & 18, 2024

The Exterior Wall Quality Assurance Course – was presented virtually by Julie McDonald and Scott Singleton. Attendees were treated to an 8-hour course which was delivered over 2 days, four hours each day. 

The course touched on the various different exterior wall systems, ethics and professional limitations to exterior wall observers work, project communications processes and report writing, applicable codes and standards, design and bidding processes, and various different aspects of construction administration. Highlights included:

  • Applicable codes and standards relating to construction projects.
  • Knowledge of exterior wall technology for Exterior Wall Quality Assurance professional.
  • Construction Administration process related to Exterior Wall Quality Assurances.
  • Project communications and review daily report requirements and best practices.

Lightning Protection 101 Webinar – March 28, 2024

The Lightning Protection 101 Webinar was presented virtually by Robert Cliff of Dominion Lightning Rod Co. Ltd. Attendees were introduced to proper lightning protection system design and application as conforms with UL and NFPA lightning protection requirements. 

The event gave attendees a general understanding of how lightning protection systems work including the five essential elements of effective lightning protection systems, including:

  • The risks lightning poses to unprotected buildings
  • The five essential elements to a proper lightning protection system
  • The standards that lightning protection systems should meet
  • Non-conventional methods of lightning protection
  • Considerations to take into account when designing lightning protection

IIBEC SOC Diversity & Inclusion in Building Science Forum

On January 31st, 2024, the Ontario Science Centre played host to the 3rd Annual IIBEC SOC Diversity and Inclusion Forum, drawing an impressive crowd of over 100 attendees for a day of education and networking.

The event kicked off with an opening speech by IIBEC CEO Brian Pallasch. He not only discussed upcoming IIBEC events, such as the 2024 IIBEC International Convention & Trade Show in Phoenix, Arizona, and the Building Enclosure Symposium in Toronto, Ontario, but also emphasized the pivotal role diversity plays in IIBEC’s vision and mission.

IIBEC President Amy Peevey then took center stage with a keynote presentation on “Becoming an Expert.” Offering valuable insights, she guided professionals on the path to expertise, delving into the nuances of being an expert witness.

The day continued with a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Stephanie Robinson. Panelists Jelena Madzarevic, Hannah Thevalapan, Allen Lyte, and Jennifer Hogan shared perspectives on career paths, networking, emerging trends, and mentorship, providing a comprehensive view of the industry landscape.

Following the panel discussion, attendees participated in mentor/mentee breakout groups, fostering direct engagement between guests and IIBEC’s experienced mentors. This interactive session allowed for personalized discussions and the exchange of valuable insights.

Marianne Touchie delivered a special presentation, sharing her journey to becoming a building science researcher and professor. She provided an overview of ongoing research at the University of Toronto Building Science Group, offering a glimpse into the exciting developments in the field.

The forum concluded with the award of two scholarships to deserving students in attendance, showcasing IIBEC SOC’s commitment to supporting the next generation of building science professionals.

The 3rd Annual IIBEC SOC Diversity and Inclusion Forum was a resounding success, providing a platform for learning, networking, and the celebration of diversity within the IIBEC community. A sincere thank you to all who contributed to the event’s success and to those who continue to champion diversity in our industry.

IIBEC SOC 2023 Christmas Luncheon

IIBEC SOC 2023 Christmas Luncheon

The IIBEC Southern Ontario Chapter hosted its Annual Christmas Luncheon on December 7th at Chateau Le Jardin in Vaughan, Ontario.

The event started with hors d’oeuvres and cocktails as guests registered and socialized. The Chapter also accepted donations of non-perishable items for a local food drive.

Lunch was served as Jay Campbell brought laughter and a light-hearted atmosphere to the event with his comedy performance. Blair Gamracy, Chapter President, introduced the Chapter’s 2024 Board of Directors.

Adding a lively touch to the luncheon, a Samba Trio entertained guests with a dynamic performance. Lora Ferrazzo-Bourck, Chapter Secretary, shared details about upcoming IIBEC events, notably highlighting the Diversity and Inclusion Building Science Forum on January 31, 2024, featuring IIBEC President Amy Peevey as the keynote speaker.

Wrapping up the day, Blair, Lora, and Jay announced raffle winners, ending the event on an exciting note as prizes were distributed among the lucky recipients.

A big thank you extended to all attendees whose participation made the luncheon a successful gathering. In addition, we would like to thank everyone who brought non-perishable items which were donated to the Vaughan Food Bank.

IIBEC SOC – Roof Technology & Science I Course

IIBEC Southern Ontario Chapter’s “Roof Technology & Science I” Course was held virtually over 4 afternoons in November 2023 (November 9, 10, 23, and 24). The course was a great success with 2 presenters and 22 attendees. IIBEC SOC would like to thank our presenters Burt Carver, Owner of Apex Building Sciences Inc. and Peter Saunders, Building Science & Technical Services Lead of Henry Canada.

This four-day course is a first component of a two-part series covering, in detail, aspects of the technology and science of roofing. It covers the history and evolution of roofing up to present-day common applications. It features terminology and technical information regarding roof decks and structures, roof insulation, bitumen membranes, built-up and modified bitumen membranes and flashing systems. An understanding of heat transfer theory, moisture, thermal design, and the calculation of U-factors will also be presented.

In addition to the course, IIBEC SOC offered a review of the RRO application process and requirements on Thursday November 23rd before the Roof Technology and Sciences I course to go over the following:

  • Focus on test preparation materials and resources with attention to general exam sections & objectives
  • Review of the RRO Handbook
  • Study topics
  • How to complete the RRO application and registration process
